Within a couple of days I had arrived on the famous Great Ocean Road and was nearing the lush temperate rainforest of the Great Otway National Park.

It was great to stay with a friend Ben on his parents’ farm north of the coast. An Antarctic cold snap ensured the infamous Otways weather really turned it on for me – with driving rain, hail and gusting wind.

I certainly appreciated a warm shower and a few delicious home cooked meals after so many cold drenchings. But I was quickly put to work on the house Ben’s parents were building, it was good fun and great to see a new house coming together. Many thanks to Ben and his folks for hosting me!

Camping at Johanna Beach lived up to the reputation and the 12 Apostles coastline was stunning in the wintery conditions.

As I pulled into the Caledonian Pub in Port Fairy a kind stranger invited me to stay at his place – it was lovely to be back inside after the damp coast. Steven said he might see me on the road in the morning whilst driving back from Portland. I met him an hour west and was greeted with a hot cuppa and some KFC! What a legend! Huge thanks to Steven and his son Archer for having me.

I was westward bound and quickly running out of Victoria to cycle through – soon I would be in South Australia.
